My name is Kevin Jahleel Ishimwe, and I am originally from Rwanda (The Land of a Thousand Hills) but spent most of my childhood in the US. I moved here when I was thirteen in pursuit of better life opportunities.
I come from a humble and modest family — I am a son to two wonderful caring parents who sacrificed a whole lot to ensure that I become equipped with the best knowledge to navigate the pressures of life’s subtleties.
Growing up in a diverse community of people from all walks of life truly instilled in me, at…
Fresh rain brings hope
Castaway all stale despair,
And reach for the hailing sky
moment of truth is upon us
Dance to the seasonal rhythm,
Of timely emergence
Swift feet tapping to rain dewdrops,
Of brisk sustenance
The drought of ineptitude is no longer,
Savor this brewing birth
School of passion in full effect,
Like a flower in full bloom
Hope — the pulverizing life force that wrecks illusory façades of despair.
At the end of the day — no matter how low you get, always cling to your hope. Hope is that force that reminds you that a sunrise…
I still vividly remember the first time I witnessed an act of kindness, an act so surreal that inspired me to appreciate this gift of life. The morning routine started just like any other by breaking fast with my parents and proceeding on to complete my chores before heading out to catch up with the homies in the neighborhood.
Back in those childhood years, we spent most of our days exploring the neighborhood, playing soccer, or competing for the rarest marbles; this was quite the popular game in our childhood before the dawn of technology, hours would fly by before…
Hope — a beacon of the impossibility,
The gleaming voice that throbs
Our quailed hearts to vanquish
Our doubtful state of being
The soothing melody allures out:
Our yearn for self-expression,
That emanates a sprout
Of amorphous joy; resolution
To shatter imposed boundaries,
Latent reflections of greatness,
Imminent awes of the almighty
Force exhuming our realness
Unequivocal bond of this word,
Invokes the willpower
To tune out numb ephemerals,
Sheltering our crown of life
HOPE — Hold on, pain ends
Thank you all for reading. Thanks to Melanie J. for tagging me in the “Hope” prompt. Writing this poem was…
“Give careful thought to the day when the foundation of the Lord’s temple was laid”, you gently nudged me. What would ensue, I did not expect. But I inherently knew it was no ordinary day.
“I am in awe of what my body is capable of” — a timely prompt to reflect on how magnificent this journey has been. Permeated with insurmountable thankfulness for this precious gift of life, I cannot help myself but glare at this life force.
The manifestation of a force to be reckoned with — directing each organ to bring forth its purpose for the harmonious…
Lately, I have come to realize that one’s genuine character gets truly tested the most when every desire is at one’s disposal. I never fathomed that my commitment to this delicate art of writing would get tested until recently.
As a typical pace of life resumed — and I returned to a full-time schedule, challenges to my writing endeavors increasingly emerged. It was as if I was losing grasp on a spiraling-broken axle. Fear of creativity began to prevent me from exploring other versions of my personality.
I feel that unconditional self-expression reflects our true nature, a gentle and brave…
